Scourge of Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease is one of the cruelest illnesses as family, and friends watch helplessly as a loved one slips away until all recognition is gone. Currently, 35 million people worldwide suffer from some form of dementia. The cause of the disease itself remains a mystery and so far there is no cure. But scientists are making progress in learning about Alzheimer's and exploring ways to fight back. The disease is characterized by a loss of neurons in parts of the nervous system that lead to a deterioration of cognitive and motor function. Inflammation is found in across neurodegenerative diseases, suggesting that it may be responsible for the slow deterioration of nerves.
CBD Oil and Alzheimer's
Cannabidiol (CBD) has anti-inflammatory properties. Accordingly, in 2009, when scientists at the University of Naples began investigating products that might be useful in fighting neurodegenerative diseases, they included marijuana derivatives including CBD. Because CBD also does not have any psychoactive effects, the study concluded that it could represent "a very promising agent with the highest prospect for therapeutic use."
Just last year, in 2017, a study was published in the journal CNS & Neurological Disorders - Drug Targets that reviewed a range of pre-clinical studies and concluded "the evidence largely shows that CBD can produce beneficial effects in Alzheimer's disease," although a further clinical investigation is warranted. The Italian scientists believe that CBD's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties protect receptors and channels in the brain that otherwise would be susceptible to neurodegenerative diseases. In a separate study in Australia, researchers came to the same conclusion.
Prevention Is the Best Cure
What does this mean in practice? CBD seems to have beneficial properties that might be able to help memory loss associated with Alzheimer's, although more research is needed to be sure. In the meantime, the best way to protect yourself against neurodegenerative diseases is to follow a healthy lifestyle. Although the cause of Alzheimer's is unknown, environmental toxins are one possible culprit. Exercising in fresh air, eating organic food, and staying away from sugar, alcohol, and cigarettes will keep your body strong. It will also reduce stress, which has a myriad of negative effects on the body including muscle pain, headaches, asthma attacks, or even diabetes for those who are vulnerable.
Our nervous systems are regulated by an endocannabinoid system which has receptors throughout the body. CBD interacts with these receptors to boost your natural immune system that was designed to keep you strong healthy. Although scientists have not made the connection, it seems possible that if CBD can help your body protect itself, it might also be able to retard the nerve degeneration that is associated with Alzheimer's disease. At any rate, scientists all over the world believe that researching CBD is worthwhile.
